RESEARCH FIELDS

How can smarter interfaces Make Human Actors Smarter?

To be able to address the question of appropriate design for cognitive interfaces, it is important to differentiate between two functional areas. The area of information design investigates the question as to which information is selected out of the environment and how it needs to be treated in order to support “knowledge work“ in the best possible way. The area of interaction design investigates the possibilities for action that those involved (individuals or groups) need to be given to use the information offered by the interface efficiently. Information design and interaction design interconnect with each other in their practical development, but they focus on different issues and different theoretical constructs.

INFORMATION DESIGN
Research in the area of information design focuses on the questions as to which information from the individual’s or group’s environment can be made accessible and how this information can best be presented in order to support optimally knowledge intensive processes and to counteract distortions in information processing.

Interaction Design

Research in the area of interaction design focuses on the possibilities for action that should be made available to individuals or groups in order to process optimally the information given in the interface. In this area, management strategies based on touch and gesture play an especially important role.
